This assembly is scheduled to be held July 14-19, 2009, in Asuncion, Paraguay. This grand get-together will have many parts - Assembly Gathered, Global Youth Summit, Global Church Village, tours, and special activities for children and youth.

Assembly Gathered will be held in the still-under-construction Centro Familiar de Adoracion, a Pentecostal facility built to accommodate 10,000 persons. Each day will include worship, songs from around the world, prayer, Bible study, eating together, playing, and visiting.

The MWC General Council and MWC Commissions will meet preceding and during Assembly Gathered.

Assembly Scattered will provide opportunities for persons going to and returning from Assembly Gathered to be hosted by church communities in Central and South America.

Are There Mennonites in Paraguay?

Indeed! A colorful kaleidoscope. There are about 32,000 baptized Mennonites in Paraguay. They belong to 21 different national conferences, eight of which are members of MWC. These eight conferences, comprising two thirds of Mennonite membership in Paraguay, are the official hosts of the assembly. Three of these conferences are made up of German-speaking Mennonites who first migrated to Paraguay during the 20th century. Two conferences are Spanish-speaking, arising out of the mission efforts of the immigrant Germanic Mennonites. Three conferences emerged from the interaction of indigenous Enhlet and Nivacle communities with the Germanic Mennonite settlements.

German-speaking Mennonites have been migrating to Paraguay during the past 86 years, some seeking a place of separation from outside influences and others seeking a place to call home after fleeing Europe as refugees. Today, Paraguayan Mennonites cover the spectrum - from social separation to being at the very heart of political power. (Four Mennonites currently serve at cabinet-level positions in the government. The First Lady is a member of a Spanish-speaking Mennonite congregation in Asuncion.)

Most of the tours will incorporate some of the Mennonite Colonies of which most are situated in the Chaco. These colonies occupy approximately 2 million acres and are completely self governed.
The three largest colonies are FERNHEIM, MENNO and NEULAND.
